Root of All…

Welcome to the Vernal Equinox Tarot Blog Hop. Today’s topic, as set by yours truly, is the role of Tarot in relation to money. Before we get our teeth into this meaty and bunny-free topic, here are some navigation links to help you find your way to my neighbouring posts or, if you’re lost, the master list.

Back to the matter in hand…

They say that money is the root of all evil and they, whoever “they” are, may not be entirely wrong. Money might be a necessity in our society, but it does have its challenges. The pursuit of it can often lead to evil: corporate and personal greed, corruption, argument, murder and theft, even wars, and let’s not forget Tax Returns. These are clearly the product of a warped and sadistic mind. Evil, indeed.

Whilst money may not make you happy (or so “they” say), the lack of it can certainly make you unhappy – debt, worry over how to make ends meet, family arguments over spending… In truth, we spend far too much, often unnecessarily, feeling that we need the accoutrements of modern life: the technology, the bling, whatever the Jones’ next door have, etc. That’s in addition to the everyday expenses, the bills, the mortgage, feeding the voracious gannets children, then there are the potentially dangerous spending addictions: booze, fags, drugs…shoes. And it’s all so very hard to give up, at least if you want to survive. The Devil’s work, indeed!

15-Devil

So here we are, manacled to our bills, obsessing over our bank balances and driven to drink (and/or drugs – the green fairy is both), while the Tax man* Devil watches over.

*I did want to use a tax man to represent the Devil, but these days, they walk among us, concealed, without so much as a bowler hat or evil twirly moustache to give them away.

What do you think, does this representation of the Devil resonate with you? Share your thoughts below 🙂

  1. I like your line, “*I did want to use a tax man to represent the Devil, but these days, they walk among us, concealed, without so much as a bowler hat or evil twirly moustache to give them away.” You always bring a fresh breath of humor to your topics! I think your Devil card is fun and playful while hitting the most common attributes. I also use the Devil as one of my money cards, although I don’t think it’s always bad–it can mean, be a power broker when it comes to money, go big, all in.

  2. “let’s not forget Tax Returns. These are clearly the product of a warped and sadistic mind. Evil, indeed.” lol I also like: ” but these days, they walk among us, concealed, without so much as a bowler hat or evil twirly moustache to give them away.” Are those taxes underneath that drink?? *more laughing
