Singin’ In the Rain

Welcome to another edition of the Tarot Blog Hop, the 50th no less, and our wrangler has given us the theme of musicals and music. A fitting way to celebrate, I think. But before we clear our throats, warm up our vocal chords and prepare to take the stage, here are the navigation links for the playlist.

It just so happens that lately I have been thinking of rain. Perhaps the Blog Hop theme, which I had mentally put on a back burner, triggered it. Maybe it was the simply the wet weather which, as a dog walker, I am exposed to regularly. I’ve been caught out in the rain a few times recently and took the picture you see below, when walking along the canal on one such occasion.

I’m no Gene Kelly and I don’t particularly enjoy getting wet, especially when it is also cold and I am not appropriately attired, thus Singing In The Rain (do check out this alternative version, you’ll thank me :)) is not the first tune that springs to mind at these moments. Neither is it Travis’ dirge Why Does It Always Rain On Me (in truth, I don’t get rained on that often). No, the tune I tend to think of is Led Zeppelin’s The Rain Song. Aside from being really good (but then are there any Led Zeppelin songs that aren’t?), it just sounds like raindrops – the gentle, slightly melancholy kind, rather than a torrential downpour.

Rain can be quite depressing if it persists for a long time, but it can also be refreshing, necessary and cleansing. so my initial association for rain was the 3 of Swords, but somehow the abundance of water involved (we won’t mention the mud) and the obvious lack of swords made it an inadequate fit.

The lyric in The Rain Song that always sticks in my mind is “upon us all a little rain must fall”, which rather sums up the 5 of Cups for me. Then there is also “These are the seasons of emotion and like the wind they rise and fall” 5 of Cups again. And, of course, the Cups are associated with  water – the cups may be absent, but the water is there.

The trick with the 5 of Cups is to not to forget that the sun will be back. Maybe not today. Maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of your… Oh wait, that’s a different story altogether and far more fitting for the 3 of Swords. Wanders off humming As Time Goes By.

So there you have it. Before you press the button for the next track, please take a moment to let me know what you think in the comments. Contrary to all good advice, I always read reviews 😀

  1. Great photo. It’s fun trying to imagine what might be reflected there. I got caught in the rain (more like sleet) the other day. Luckily I didn’t have far to go! I did get drenched though. But the two tarot decks I had in my book bag stayed dry. I guess it was a Five of Cups experience!

    1. Same here – 5 minutes and I was completely soaked through and had to change all my clothes.

  2. Beautiful 5 of Cups Ania! It might be rain, or someone’s tears falling uncontrollably. I love it!

  3. Love your 5 of Cups image… it’s promoting lots of thoughts in me in abstract ways… I like the ripples and it puts me on mind of the physics of sound waves and patterns of interference where sometimes when waves overlap they amplify and other times they overlap to cancel one another out…

    1. Thank you 🙂 I love the patterns water makes too, hence I whipped out my phone and took a pic 😀

  4. I love the way you link the lyrics in with your photo: it adds lots of nuances. Still, the picture in itself also works really well. I imagined someone looking at the rain and getting all melancholy, which is how I often see the Five of Cups 🙂

    1. Yes, it is those off-guard moments when the melancholy and sadness associated with loss and regrets that catches us unawares, like a sudden shower of rain.
